The hashtag #comprehensive_strike in both Arabic and English topped the trending list in several Arab countries such as Jordan, Lebanon, Qatar and Egypt, coinciding with the entry into a comprehensive strike in many Arab countries after calls made by activists to participate in a general strike today, Monday, in condemnation of the Israeli war on the Gaza Strip and in solidarity with the besieged people of Gaza. Tweeters circulated video clips showing commercial markets closing their doors completely in various Jordanian cities. Other clips also showed traffic stopping in the streets of Beirut and other Lebanese cities in response to calls for a general strike, and other clips of shops closing in the Turkish city of Istanbul.

Activists called on everyone to participate in the comprehensive strike, and said that Western countries provided moral, material, and military support as well to the Israeli occupation authorities, and in return, everyone in the Arab and Islamic world must stand in solidarity in word and deed with the people of Gaza. The Secretary-General of the International Union of Muslim Scholars, Dr. Ali Al-Qaradaghi, called for participation in the strike, and tweeted, via his account on the The launch of a comprehensive global strike by the International Union of Muslim Scholars on Monday reflects comprehensive awareness of the importance of participating in this issue, and carries a strong message to the entire world.”
Dr. Al-Qaradaghi added that the strike is not just a protest, but rather an effective tool for peaceful and legitimate pressure on the forces concerned to stop injustice and persecution. Given the international failure to stop the war on Gaza, the strike remains an important option to express rejection and protest.
Al-Qaradaghi pointed out that the strike and the response to it means that Muslims have the capabilities and means necessary to influence public opinion, and they can find effective media strategies to attract attention and participate in the comprehensive strike. By calling for participation and conveying the message clearly and transparently, Muslims can play a major role in the success of this campaign. We must all realize that the strike is not just a humanitarian and Islamic duty, but it is also a position of pressure to stand in solidarity with our brothers in Gaza and stop the unjust war against them.
