Some students also revoked their diplomas for participating in anti-war demonstrations, including the Gaza 2024 camps.
Columbia University in the United States has imposed serious sanctions, including the expulsion, the suspension of courses and the revocation of academic diplomas, on dozens of students who participated in demonstrations against the War of Israel against Gaza.
The student militant group Columbia University Apartheid Disst (CUAD), which asked the school to reduce all financial links with Israel, said in a statement that nearly 80 students have now been exhibited or suspended up to three years during their involvement in antiwar demonstrations.
Tuesday, Columbia said in a statement that his latest student sanction concerned “the disturbance of the Butler library in May 2025 and the camp during the former weekend in the spring of 2024”.
“The disturbances of academic activities are in violation of the policies and rules of the university, and these violations will necessarily generate consequences,” wrote the university.
The CUAD group said that university sanctions against students “are very much exceeding the previous one for lessons or building professions not linked to the Palestinades”.
“We will not be dissuaded. We are engaging in the struggle for the Palestinian Liberation,” added the group.
The pro-Palestinian student camps of Columbia University in 2024 helped to light a global movement against the relentless war of Israel against the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. Protest sites were finally interrupted when Columbia University granted hundreds of New York police on campus, which led dozens of arrests.
Despite the harsh repressions of the university, the students demonstrators occupied the Butler library during the final exams for this year May, demanding the divestment of companies linked to the Israeli army and expressing solidarity with the Palestinians in Gaza.
The Judicial Council of the University of Columbia confirmed that it has issued expulsions, suspensions and revocations of diplomas after what it called a disturbance during the “reading period”.
