The ruling party in Croatia has joined forces with a far-right party to form the next government following the April legislative elections

The announcement came from Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic, who heads HDZ, the Croatian Democratic Union.

On April 17, the conservative ruling party came first in the legislative elections with 61 seats, but failed to obtain the 76 seats necessary for an absolute majority.

After a few weeks of negotiations, it is therefore with the DP “Movement of the Fatherland” that the coalition will be formed. According to the outgoing Prime Minister, the DP will be in charge of 3 ministerial portfolios including that of agriculture.

The DP, known for its nationalist and anti-immigrant rhetoric, campaigned during the elections opposing the Serbian minority party joining a future coalition. Since the end of the war in Former Yugoslavia, tensions have remained in Croatia between communities.

Among the thorny issues awaiting this coalition, the migration problem, corruption, but also the economy. With inflation above 4%, Croatia appears to be a bad student in the euro zone.
