Announced as “close” by Washington, a draft ceasefire agreement in Lebanon was submitted to Israel.
This Tuesday, the security cabinet, led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, must decide on this text, which notably provides for a 60-day truce and the withdrawal of Israeli troops.
The text, which was proposed by the United States, is strongly pushed by the EU. According to the head of European diplomacy, Israel has no excuse for refusing a ceasefire.
“We must keep up the pressure on Israel to approve the ceasefire proposal today”said Josep Borrell.
The subject was also at the heart of discussions in Italy, while the foreign ministers of the G7 countries are meeting in Rome.
Like the United Kingdom, France and Germany, Italy supports this proposed ceasefire agreement in Lebanon.
“We have a common vision of the situation in the Middle East. We are working for peace and hope that we can soon achieve a ceasefire in Lebanon. We are also working for a ceasefire in Gaza, but also with a vision for the day after”reacted Antonio Tajani, Italian Minister of Foreign Affairs.
After weeks of bombing, Israel intensified its raids on Tuesday and said it had hit around thirty targets in southern Lebanon. Bombings which also concern the capital, Beirut, which was shelled after evacuation orders from the Israeli army.
Since October 2023, this conflict has left more than 3,700 dead and more than 15,000 injured, according to the Lebanese Ministry of Health.
