Nicolas Sarkozy sentenced on appeal to one year in prison, six months of which will be suspended.

The former president was on trial in the “Bygmalion” affair, named after the communications agency responsible for Nicolas Sarkozy’s presidential campaign in 2012.

The Paris Court of Appeal considers that Nicolas Sarkozy had been warned that his campaign’s legal expenses had been exceeded.

The former president has decided to appeal to the Court of Cassation.

According to local media, Nicolas Sarkozy’s campaign for the 2012 presidential election would have cost 43 million euros, almost twice the maximum amount authorized.

A double billing system had been put in place to hide the campaign financing overrun.

Unlike the other defendants prosecuted in this case, Nicolas Sarkozy was not implicated in the system of false invoices.
