Residents of the Terézváros district are voting to ban short-term rentals such as Airbnb, which is accused of contributing to rising rents in the popular Budapest district.
For or against banning the short-term tourist rental platform Airbnb in your neighborhood? This is the question that the residents of Terézváros, Budapest, must answer in a two-week referendum.
Around 7% of the homes in this popular area, or 2,200 properties, are currently dedicated to short-term rentals. Rentals that benefit the local economy, but also drive up property prices.
The mayor of the sixth district, Tamas Soproni, has already announced that several thousand people need to vote in favour of the idea for the proposal to be accepted.
” Unfortunately, the reason we are asking this question is because we have no other legal option. There is little that municipalities can do. ” he said.
This initiative follows the decision of other European cities, like Barcelonato limit the number of short-term rentals or to express their desire to simply eliminate these services.
