Brazilian President Lula da Silva said on Thursday evening that he “will not receive orders from a foreigner,” in response to the message of US President Donald Trump, in which he imposed customs duties on Brazil by 50%.
In a message last week, Trump attributed the fees to be applied in August to Brazil’s treatment of former President Jayer Bolsonaro – who is being tried in his country on charges of managing a coup attempt – and what he says are unfair commercial practices from Brazil against American companies.
Da Silva and members of his government rejected the reasons behind the fees, confirming the sovereignty of Brazil, and at the same time they called for trade negotiations with the United States.
Da Silva said during his address to a group of students from the left stream in Joyas.
He added that Brazil will impose taxes on American technology companies, saying that it “promotes violence and false news under the pretext of freedom of expression.”
For his part, Brazilian Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira told CNN Brazil separately on Thursday that Da Silva is open to talks with Trump, although they have not yet met.
“If the circumstances are available, they will speak,” he added.
