Brazil: Plane crashes with 62 people on board in Sao Paulo state

A plane with 62 people on board crashed Friday in a residential area of ​​a city in the state of Sao Paulo in Brazil, Brazilian airline VoePass announced.

The airline confirmed in a statement that a plane bound for Sao Paulo’s Guarulhos International Airport crashed with 58 passengers and four crew members on board. The statement did not specify the cause of the accident.

Firefighters confirmed that the plane crashed in the town of Vinhedo, with the city’s mayor saying there were no survivors.

Brazilian television channel GloboNews showed footage of a large area of ​​fire and smoke billowing from the apparent fuselage of a plane in a residential neighborhood filled with homes. Other footage broadcast by GloboNews showed a plane drifting vertically downward in a spiral.

At an event in southern Brazil, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva asked the crowd to stand and observe a minute of silence.
