After three days of walking, about 6,000 people arrived at Potocari in Bosnia and Herzegovina, the city where the Srebrenica Genocide Memorial is located.

They took the same path that many Bosnians took almost 30 years ago, fleeing the raging war.

Among them were children of fighters and civilians from Srebrenicaentering arm in arm, just as their fathers did 29 years ago.

July 11, 1995the Srebrenica enclave fell to Bosnian Serb forces led by General Ratko Mladić.

It was the beginning of the largest massacre of civilians since the end of World War II. 8,372 Bosnian Muslim men and boys were rounded up and executed before being buried in mass graves.

Tribute also to Belgrade

At the same time, in the Serbian capital, several dozen human rights activists commemorated the anniversary of the massacre.

Banners read: “Solidarity – We will never forget the Srebrenica genocide” and also Declare! Declare! Declare! A message intended for the Serbian authorities who refuse to speak of “genocide” considering that this term stigmatizes the entire Serbian people.

Belgrade also refuses to establish an international day of commemoration, despite a recent vote at the UN which adopted a resolution last May.

Survivors and relatives of the victims welcomed the UN decision to make July 11 a day of commemoration, while the Serbs felt that this choice would further complicate attempts at reconciliation between the various minorities that make up Bosnia-Herzegovina.
