The European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, warned the world of “a major fire, after it lost its humanity by ignoring the conflicts in the Middle East.”
Borrell said, “The world is on the verge of a major fire, and as long as the war continues in Gaza and Lebanon, we will remain on the brink of a spark that ignites a larger fire.”
Borrell’s statement to the Spanish radio “RNE” came as a comment on the genocide that Israel has been committing in the Gaza Strip for more than a year, and its aggression against Lebanon since last September 23.
The European official pointed out that the United Nations confirms that the Gaza Strip is witnessing the most violent and dangerous humanitarian crisis the world has witnessed since World War II. Borrell added, “What is happening in the Middle East shows that we have lost our humanity.”
The senior European official expressed the international community’s concern about the possibility of Israel attacking nuclear or oil facilities in Iran, calling for the implementation of what he described as “coercive measures” to stop the conflict in the Middle East.
Regarding arms exports to Israel, he said, “There is no joint decision in the European Union regarding stopping arms sales to Israel. He stressed that each country in the Union has its own decision regarding arms sales to Israel.”
He added, “Every country decides what is appropriate for it, and I cannot prevent anyone from doing something, or recommend doing something else.” Spain, Italy and France have suspended arms sales to Israel, unlike other countries such as Germany that are working to enhance military aid to it, so there is no common position.”
