The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution calling for a ceasefire in Gaza.
The text is non-binding. Like France, 153 countries voted for the resolution.
23 countries, including Germany, abstained.
Israel, the United States, Austria and the Czech Republic are among the ten countries which opposed it.
The vote on the resolution comes a few days after the rejection of a similar text by the UN Security Council where the United States had vetoed.
For his part, the American president reiterated his country’s support for Israel while expressing his concern about “the incriminated bombings” on the Palestinian enclave.
According to Joe Biden, even if there is “no comparison” possible with the massacres of October 7, the IDF’s response threatens to undermine international support for the Israeli cause.
135 hostages are still held prisoner in the Gaza Strip.
According to a Hamas official interviewed by the Associated Press agency, “the resistance and firmness of the Palestinians make Biden understand that the Israeli military operation is madness.”
For his part, Israeli army spokesperson Daniel Hagari assures that the IDF is targeting “Hamas strongholds in such a way as to separate terrorist targets from innocent civilians as best as possible.”
The head of American diplomacy Jake Sullivan is due to travel to Israel this week for consultations.
