A few hours after positioning themselves in front of the presidential palace in La Paz, the Bolivian military and their armored vehicles withdrew.

The attempted coup was allegedly organized by two generals, who were arrested Wednesday evening. General Juan José Zuniga, head of the Army, and Juan Arnez, head of the Navy.

Mr. Zúñiga, Mr. Arnez and all those who planned the coup attempt against our country have lost all credibility. Nobody believed in what they were doing, neither the media nor the citizens. They did not have the support of the population.“, said Carlos del Castillo, Minister of the Government of Bolivia.

Before his arrest, one of the generals told journalists that the Bolivian president had asked him to organize the coup.

The president told me: “The situation is very complicated. This week is going to be critical, so we have to prepare something to strengthen my popularity“, said Juan José Zúñiga, former head of the Army.

This failed putsch comes a few months before the 2025 presidential election.
