Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu left Tel Aviv on Sunday morning for the United States, where he will meet US President Donald Trump on Tuesday.

Netanyahu said the two men would discuss “Hamas victory”, the fight against Iran and the enlargement of diplomatic relations with the Arab countries.

This meeting will be Mr. Trump’s first with a foreign leader since the start of the second term on January 20, which, according to Netanyahu, “testifies to the strength of the Israeli-American alliance“.

It seems that the Israeli Prime Minister seeks to deepen links with the United States after tense relations under the administration of Mr. Biden.

“”I think that by working closely with President Trump, we can redraw it even further and for the best. I think we can strengthen security, expand the circle of peace and reach a remarkable era of peace by force“Said the Israeli Prime Minister before his departure.

A nose to the International Criminal Court

The arrival of Mr. Netanyahu in the United States then comes that he is the subject of an arrest warrant Delivered by the International Criminal Court (ICC) in November of last year.

Last November, the highest global court in matters of war crimes issued an arrest warrant against Mr. Netanyahu and the former Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant for having committed alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity. The court also issued an arrest warrant against the chief of Hamas, Mohammed DEIF. Hamas has since confirmed that the latter had died in an Israeli bombardment.

The 27 member states of the European Union are part of the ICC and are therefore required to hold the suspects subject to an arrest warrant if they set foot on their soil. The United States and Israel, on the other hand, are not part of the court.

From the first day of his mandate, Donald Trump signed a series of decrees, including a bill to restore the possibility of sanctioning the ICC. The bill was however blocked by the Democrats of the Senate on Tuesday.

Thursday, the CPI director of the CPI said that it “regretted any attempt to undermine independence, integrity and impartiality of the court“.
