China celebrated the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China by the communist regime.

The celebrations began in Tiananmen Square, with the honor guard marching from the entrance to the Imperial City, which in centuries past was the residence of Chinese emperors.

The flag-raising ceremony comes as China faces growing economic challenges and tensions with neighbors including Japan, South Korea and the Philippines over territorial claims. These are supported by Beijing’s main rival, the United States.
