The commander of the Gaza Division, Brigadier General Avi Rosenfeld, announced his resignation from his position, explaining that it was due to his failure in “the mission of protecting the Gaza envelope area,” during the Al-Aqsa Flood Battle on October 7 last year.
According to the Israeli Broadcasting Corporation, Rosenfeld added that “everyone must bear responsibility for what happened on October 7,” without providing further details.
Rosenfeld’s resignation came about a month and a half after the resignation of the head of the Military Intelligence Division (Aman), Aharon Haliva, against the backdrop of his failure to uncover the Al-Aqsa flood operation on October 7, 2023.
The Gaza Division is a military division in the Israeli occupation army bearing the number “643”. It operates under the command of the Southern Military District, and is headquartered at the Ra’im base, which is 7 kilometers away from the Gaza Strip. Its mission is to guard the borders adjacent to the Gaza Strip, manage assassinations and destroy tunnels that it discovers in the area. The Gaza Strip, which includes two brigades: northern and southern.
The Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, the military wing of the Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas), announced last month that it had captured the commander of the Southern Brigade in the Gaza Division, Assaf Hamami, on October 7, during the Battle of al-Aqsa Flood.
During the past months, a number of Israeli officials submitted their resignations against the backdrop of accusations of failure to manage the war on Gaza, with expectations of a series of resignations in the army leadership, including Chief of Staff Herzi Halevy and his deputy, Amir Baram.
In exchange for the resignation of Rosenfeld and Haleva, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejects the opposition’s accusations that he bears responsibility for this failure, and insists on continuing in his position despite mounting calls to hold early elections.
