On Sunday, at least 95 people died across the country. Among the victims were at least 14 police officers. There were also hundreds of injured, according to the police spokesman.
Anti-government protesters in Bangladesh planned to march on the capital Dhaka on Monday after a weekend of violence that left around 100 people dead, as the military imposed an indefinite curfew and authorities cut mobile internet in an attempt to stem the unrest.
According to the country’s leading Bengali-language daily Prothom Alo, at least 95 people, including at least 14 police officers, were killed in clashes in the capital on Sunday. Hundreds more were injured in the violence.
The protests began with students protesting a quota system for government jobs, but clashes with police and pro-government activists turned violent.
This prompted protest and opposition leaders to call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to resign, leading to growing protests across the country.
The Prime Minister said that the protesters who carried out acts of sabotage and destruction were no longer students, but criminals.
At least 11,000 people have been arrested in recent weeks. The unrest has also led to the closure of schools and universities across the country.
