In a few days, Formula 1 fans will have their eyes turned towards Baku, which hosts the Azerbaijan Grand Prix from September 15.

The reason this competition is so popular is because it has the fastest straight in Formula 1 and one of the most beautiful circuits.

It takes place in the old town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Around 2,000 volunteers have been recruited for the preparations for this international competition.

“The atmosphere is incredible. There is a lot of preparation behind the scenes. And you always learn something, you have fun.”explains one of them.

The country has hosted this championship since 2016.

“It’s a growing sport. It’s growing globally. It’s great for our country to be a part of it. It brings a lot of recognition. There’s also a lot of tourism. The country and its citizens also get financial benefits from it.”explains Magsud Farzullayev, director of the Baku City Circuit.

Baku has also hosted other sporting competitions, such as the 2019 Europa League final between English football teams Chelsea and Arsenal. Four matches of the 2020 Euro football championship were also held in the Azerbaijani capital.

This type of competition also helps to improve the country’s image internationally.

Since its independence in 1991, Azerbaijan has been ruled by the Aliyev family. The current regime is often criticized for its repression of opponents.
