The Austrian government has announced strict new rules for asylum seekers that will require them to work while in the country.

The new measures require refugees to carry out charitable work for the federal and local governments, or in companies employing at least five social workers, in nursing services or in shelters for the homeless.

Austrian Interior Minister Gerhard Karner announced the new measures, which came into effect on Tuesday, July 16. “If you do not perform any community service, your pocket money will be reduced accordingly, from 40 to 20 euros,” he explained.

The new measures aim to strengthen the integration of refugees.
