Australian Open: Italian Jannik Sinner wins his first Grand Slam title

Jannik Sinnecame back from two sets behind to win the final of the Australian Open against Daniil Medvedev (3-6, 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-3), Sunday, and win his first Grand Slam title.

Jannik Sinner, aged 22, participated for the first time in a major tournament final. He achieved this by ending the long domination of Novak Djokovic on the tournament, reversing the situation in the semi-final.

He is the first Italian to win the Australian Open title.

For Daniil Medvedev, 2021 US Open championthis defeat is the fifth in six major finals.

The Russian has lost two finals in a row here against Djokovic in 2021 and against Rafael Nadal – after leading by two sets – the following year. This time around, he won three matches in five sets to reach the championship match and made two comebacks after being down two sets to none.

Jannik Sinner only lost one single set in six rounds – in a third set tiebreaker against Djokovic – until his comeback in five sets on Sunday.
