Attempt to assassinate one of the symbols of political opposition in Mali news

The opposition politician in Mali, Sheikh Omar Dumbia, was subjected to an assassination attempt to stab a knife, late on Saturday night, near his house in the Calaban neighborhood of Koro in the capital, Bamako.

According to field sources, the aggressors – and they are a group of men in a four -wheel drive vehicle – were shocked by Dumbia at the time of his departure from his home, and they attacked him, except that his friends and some attendees entered him.

Dumbia is one of the most prominent young faces defending democracy, and it is one of the founders of the “Youth for Democracy”, which demands the departure of the Military Council and the organization of transparent elections that bring the country back to the path of democratic life.

Dumbia appeared as a leader in the recent protests that were organized at the beginning of this month in the capital, Bamako, and demanded the departure of the military and the provision of basic services, such as electrification and water.

This incident comes in light of the escalation of arrests and kidnappings targeting opposition political figures, since last Thursday, prominent state security services, Alasan Aba and Bashir Tiam, are still in an unknown location.

While civil society sources accuse parties close to the Authority of inciting opponents, no official comments from the authorities have been issued so far on the attack, at a time when calls are increasing to stop the restrictions on political freedoms.

It is noteworthy that the transitional government had issued a decision last Wednesday to suspend the activities of political parties and associations until further notice, under the pretext of preserving public order, a step that the opposition considered an attempt to silence free voices.
