Attack on someone close to Navalny: Lithuania points the finger at Russia


For the Lithuanian security services, the attack in Vilnius on Russian opponent Leonid Volkov was perpetrated by the Russian regime. The attacker is still actively sought.

The violent attack suffered by Leonid Volkov, a close collaborator of former Russian opponent Alexeï Navalny, in Vilnius, was an operation orchestrated and executed by Russia. This was stated by the Lithuanian State Security Service on Wednesday.

“The attack on Leonid Volkov, member of the Anti-Corruption Foundation, in Vilnius on March 12, 2024, is an operation organized and executed by Russia__aimed at preventing the implementation of Russian opposition projects in connection with the upcoming undemocratic Russian presidential elections”said the SSD in a press release.

The Lithuanian police chief announced that officers from the Lithuanian Criminal Police Bureau were investigating. A massive force is deployedboth in terms of analytical abilities and physical abilities”declared the Commissioner General of Police.

The Lithuanian Interior Minister declared that “such provocations, as we have seen recently, have become our daily routine“.

Leonid Volkov was attacked with a hammer on Tuesday in front of his home. Injured in the face, hand and legs, he was taken to hospital but later released.

As for his attacker, he is actively sought.

On Wednesday, during a visit to Paris, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nauseda said: “I want to make it very clear that the services will assess, investigate and, I hope, find the perpetrators. And to Putin, I can only say one thing: no one is afraid of you here.”
