Ateko Abu Bakr, former Nigerian Vice President, announced his withdrawal from the opposition Popular Democratic Party, ending a political path that extended for years within the corridors of the 16 -year -old party.

Abu Bakr’s announcement came through an official message to the party’s leadership, in which he expressed the “pain of separation”, pointing to “non -settlement differences” that led him to make this decision.

“With a heavy heart, I submit my resignation, realizing the size of the contrast, which is separating me from the current party’s path,” he said.

Abu Bakr is one of the most prominent political figures in Nigeria.

With the growing tensions within the traditional parties, Abu Bakr announced his joining a new alliance in the name of the “African Democratic Conference” that includes prominent personalities on the political scene, including Peter Obi, Nasser Al -Rifai and a number of former deputies and conservatives belonging to the ruling party.

This alliance aims to form a strong opposition front in the face of the “Conservatory of All Progressive”, led by President Paula Ahmed Tenobo, in preparation for the presidential entitlement in 2027.

These developments are back to mind the scenario of 2015, when it caused a similar alliance to overthrow the Popular Democratic Party, ending the 16 -year dominance.

As the election date approaches, the opposition is counting that this coalition is a new start that opens a way for the Nigerians a way towards a expected political change.
