The breakthrough, announced by the polls, of the far right during the European elections worries the LGBTQIA+ community. The NGO ILGA Europe is sounding the alarm. She calls on candidates in the June election to strengthen legislation in favor of minorities.
“Freedom of movement, which is at the heart of EU values, is still not guaranteed for transgender people, intersex people, non-binary people and rainbow families“, specifies Chaber, executive director of ILGA Europe.
“The new Commission and the new Parliament must therefore prioritize filling these legislative gaps as quickly as possible.“, they continue. Chaber emphasizes, however, that progress has been made over the past five years.
Italy is cited as an example of these concerns. The lack of clear legislation on how to declare the birth of a child of the same-sex couple allowed the government of Giorgia Meloni to prohibit municipalities from registering the persons concerned as parents.
ILGA Europe has also published a map on the legal situation of the LGBTQIA+ community. According to this projection, it is the Poland which obtains the worst results. But with the change of government at the end of last year, NGOs are already speaking of signs of change.
“Individuals and representatives invited to discuss potential legislation on same-sex partnerships and (countering) hate speech“, explains Dawid Wojtyczka from the Znaki Rownosci Federation.
“For now, after these few months, we do not see the change, but we feel that it is happening“, he continues.
Despite increased legal protection, the LGBTQIA+ community experiences more violence in the EU. According to the European Agency for Fundamental Rights, two thirds of those questioned were victims of hate messages.
