A candidate from the far-right party suffered a defeat during the vote held this Sunday in Thuringia, even though he came first in the first round against the representative of the CDU.

These elections defied predictions in a region considered a bastion of political formation, where the party had won the administration of a local authority for the first time last year. The party had previously achieved notable breakthroughs in Saxony and Brandenburg.

A ballot that looks like a test, therefore, in the run-up to the European elections in June and the regional elections which will be held in several Länder next September.
