A violent earthquake of 8.8 degrees off the Russian coast of the Kamchatka island on Tuesday night/Wednesday, which led to the tsunami that flooded coastal areas in the north of the Korel Islands, where the Russian Ministry of Emergency announced floods in the city of Severo-Corlakesk and evacuated all its residents of about two thousand people.

In Japan, the authorities evacuated the Fukushima nuclear station, while the first tsunami waves arrived at the island of Hokkaido with a height of 30 centimeters, amid warnings of later waves that could reach 3 meters on the coast of the archipelago overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The Japanese Meteorological Authority called on the residents to move away from the beaches and not to go out to the sea until the warning was raised, and the authorities in Mexico and Indonesia issued similar warnings to the residents of coastal areas.

The United States, in turn, issued warnings of tsunami on the western coast, including the states of California, Oregon, Alaska and the Hawaiian Archipelago, and called on the Hawaiian emergency department to evacuate coastal areas immediately, warning of “devastating” waves.

This earthquake is the most violent in the region since 1952, and its center is located at a depth of 19.3 km, and about 136 km from the city of Petrobavlofovsk-Kamcatsky in eastern Russia, raising fears of widespread repercussions on the coast of the Pacific Ocean.

Tsunami warnings

According to the American Early Tsunami Center, the tsunami waves threaten parts of the coast of Alaska and the American Island in the Pacific Ocean, as well as the coasts of Russia and Japan “within 3 hours.”

The warning includes all the US coasts overlooking the Pacific Ocean, from Alaska to Hawaii and California, but the danger of the expected tsunami waves is varied.

In Peru, the navy stressed that due to the earthquake, “a tsunami warning was issued along the coast of the country.”

The Ecuadorian authorities also ordered a “precautionary evacuation” of the beaches in the Galapagos Archipelago due to the risk of Tsunami as a result of the earthquake.

The National Risk Prevention Authority said in a statement that it had ordered an “immediate suspension of marine activities, in addition to a precautionary evacuation of beaches, sidewalks and low areas” in the archipelago, which is one thousand kilometers from the mainland.

In Tokyo, the Japanese authorities have warned that high tide waves up to 3 meters may strike between 01:00 and 02:30 (GMT), the coast of the archipelago overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

“Tsunami waves will strike the area frequently. Please do not go out to the sea or approach the coast until the warning is raised.”

On July 20, an earthquake of 7.4 degrees, followed by many defects, occurred in the same area, followed by many damage, without causing severe damage.

The Russian peninsula separating the Ochkhatsk Sea from the Pacific Ocean is “one of the most vulnerable areas of earthquakes in the world,” according to the American Geological Survey.
