Amnesty International called on the United States to investigate a strike that hit a center for migrants in Saada last month and killed dozens. She said it was a “violation of international humanitarian law” and a war crime.
The Houthis in Yemen announced that at least 68 people were killed in a bombing carried out by the United States at a shelter for African immigrants in Saada on April 28.
Amnesty International confirmed, based on the analysis of satellite -captured images, that “American attacks” on the Saada prison complex targeted a detention center for immigrants and another building on the site.
She stressed the need to investigate the raid as a “violation of international humanitarian law”, amid reports that hundreds of people were killed and injured as a result of US air strikes on Yemen since March 2025.
“The United States attacked a well -known detention center in which the Houthis are holding immigrants who had no way to take shelter,” said Amnesty International Secretary -General Anis Kalamar.
“The big losses in the lives of civilians in this attack raises serious questions about whether the United States has complied with its obligations under international humanitarian law, including the rules of caution and discrimination,” Kalamar added.
While the organization indicated that it was unable to independently verify the number of deaths, it said that if the number of victims was proven, this raid would be the “worst” that is harmful to civilians in one American attack since an air strike on Mosul in Iraq in 2017.
Calmaar called on the United States to “conduct an immediate, independent and transparent investigation into this air strike and in any other air strikes that resulted in civilian casualties, as well as in those in which he may have violated the rules of international humanitarian law.”
The Central US Military Command (Centcom) indicated in the wake of the attack as “aware of allegations that human losses occurred among civilians related to American strikes in Yemen, and these allegations take seriously.”
The Amnesty International report stated that if the investigations confirmed that civilians or random attacks occurred that affected military and civilian targets without discrimination, and resulted in the killing or injury of civilians, “they must be investigated and considered violations of international law and possible war crimes.”
The organization added that “if civilians are damaged, the victims and their families must get full compensation for violations of international humanitarian law.”
On March 15, Washington began a semi -daily raid campaign targeting the Houthis. These attacks led to hundreds of deaths, before the announcement of the suspension of American strikes on Yemen and the reach of an agreement between the United States and the Houthis by Omani on May 6.
After the outbreak of the war in Gaza on October 7, 2023, the Houthis began attacking ships in the Red Sea linked to Israel, stressing that this comes in support of the Palestinians in the Strip.
