After Hurricanes Milton and Helene, a lack of coordination in the U.S. government’s disaster response left thousands of people stranded and in need of assistance. It sparked a backlash online, with many questioning why billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars are being spent on overseas military aid while disaster relief at home is failing. From climate resilience to education to housing affordability, Americans say their money should first be invested in solving critical national issues.
