Ivory Coast coach Jean-Louis Gasset was sacked on Wednesday January 24 for “insufficient results”, two days after a rout (0-4) against Equatorial Guinea in the African Cup of Nations (CAN). ), even if the Elephants can still hope to reach 8e of final.

“The contracts of coach-selector Jean-Louis Gasset and his assistant Ghislain Printant are terminated for insufficient results,” indicates the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF) in a press release.

The Ivorian Emerse Faé, who was one of the French technician’s assistants, aged 70, will act as interim manager, specifies the authority.

The FIF “expresses its regrets for the performance of the Elephants during the group stage of the CAN” played at home, while they are not yet eliminated from the tournament.

After a good start against Guinea-Bissau (2-0), the Ivorians were beaten by Nigeria (1-0), then crushed by Equatorial Guinea (4-0). The fact is that Gasset, coach of Côte d’Ivoire since May 2022, emerged greatly weakened from the humiliation suffered on Monday.

Qualification still possible

With three points, the Elephants finished 3e of group A and must wait for the results of the other teams on Wednesday, to know whether or not they will be part of the four best thirds who go to 8e of final.

Two scenarios can still allow Ivory Coast to advance: in group E, Mali must beat Namibia and at the same time South Africa must not lose against Tunisia. Otherwise, in Group F, a victory for Morocco at the expense of Zambia would automatically send Ivory Coast to the final phase.

In the event of qualification, it is Emerse Faé who will take place on the bench.

Monday evening, after the defeat against Equatorial Guinea, Jean-Louis Gasset, referring to a “nightmare” match, indicated that he would meet the president of the Ivorian Football Federation (FIF), Yacine Idriss Diallo to discuss his future.
