Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has ordered a complaint to be filed with the International Criminal Court over the assassination of Turkish-American activist Aisha Nur Azgi Aygi, who was killed by the Israeli army in the occupied West Bank.
“We feel sad about her loss and angry at this usurping occupier. We are working with the American and Turkish authorities to achieve a fair investigation, and we are preparing to file a complaint with the International Criminal Court about the crime of her assassination by the Israeli occupation forces,” Abbas was quoted as saying by the official Palestinian news agency WAFA.
This came during a phone call Abbas made to Suad Egi, the father of the Turkish-American activist, to offer his condolences for her “martyrdom.”
The agency added that Abbas “decided to award Aisha Nour the Star of Jerusalem Medal in appreciation of her great sacrifices in supporting our people and their right to freedom and independence.”
The Palestinian President said, “Martyr Aisha Nour sacrificed her life defending justice, truth and solidarity with the Palestinian people,” and that she will remain “a true symbol of the solidarity of the brotherly Turkish and Palestinian peoples and of all free people in the world.”
The Israeli army killed Turkish-American activist Aisha Nour with live bullets while she was participating in an event denouncing settlements in the town of Beita in the Nablus Governorate in the northern occupied West Bank, on September 6.
On Friday, the activist’s body was returned to Turkey, where she was buried yesterday, Saturday, after performing the funeral prayer after the noon prayer at the central mosque in her hometown in the Didim district of Aydın province in the west of the country.
Since the outbreak of the war on the Gaza Strip on October 7, the Israeli army and settlers have escalated their attacks on Palestinian citizens and their property in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem. This has resulted in the killing of 703 Palestinians, including 159 children, and the wounding of about 5,700, according to data from the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
With American support, Israel has been waging a devastating war on Gaza since October 7, 2023, leaving more than 136,000 Palestinians dead and wounded, most of them children and women, and more than 10,000 missing, amid massive destruction and deadly famine.
In contempt of the international community, Israel continues the war, ignoring the UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate halt, and the International Court of Justice’s orders to take measures to prevent genocide and improve the catastrophic humanitarian situation in Gaza.
