a tantalizing Lions duel in perspective

CAN 2024 gets a little closer to the heart of the matter on Friday, with the continuation of the 2nd day of the group phase, with a promising Senegal – Cameroon on the program. And a Cape Verde – Mozambique which could reshuffle the cards of group B after the draw between Egypt and Ghana on Thursday. A result which confirms that the favorites are not always celebrating in this African Cup of Nations, like Ivory Coast, beaten by Nigeria.

The reigning African Champions will be able to count on their nugget, Lamine Camara, to win. The young FC Metz midfielder, from the Generation Football sector, is the symbol of a youth who is renewing the team to continue to dominate the continent.

What happened yesterday

Equatorial Guinea blasts Guinea-Bissau : thanks to a hat-trick from its captain Emilio Nsué, Equatorial Guinea largely defeated Guinea-Bissau (4-2) and is already looking towards the round of 16.

Nigeria revives and cools Ivory Coast: in the most intense and challenging match of the CAN so far, Nigeria defeated Ivory Coast (1-0) thanks to a penalty converted by its captain Ekong. The Super Eagles are relaunched in group A, Ivory Coast experiences a first hiccup.

Boredom, then the festival with Egypt – Ghana: after a dull first half, the clash between the Pharaohs and the Black Stars got carried away (2-2). Once again, the seven-time African champions scared themselves, trailing twice thanks to a double from Mohammed Kudus. The Egyptians remain in a favorable position in this CAN but may have lost Mohamed Salah (see below).

In short

“Aren’t you happy? Nsue’s hat-trick!” : by scoring a hat-trick against Guinea-Bissau on Thursday, Emilio Nsué is the first player to achieve this performance since 2008. And above all the oldest player to achieve this feat in an African Cup final phase. He is currently the top scorer in the competition. A goal for him.

Ivorian jerseys, an expensive passion: in the streets of Abidjan and around the stadiums, the national team jerseys are out. But displaying the colors of Côte d’Ivoire comes at a cost: around 90 euros for the official jersey, while the minimum wage is only 115 euros. But on the markets, we find them at all prices… Report by Samia Metheni.

The statement

Jay-Jay Okocha, Nigeria legend: “It’s always difficult to play at home. The pressure is on you. Ivory Coast love their football so they don’t just want to win. They want to win in style. It puts pressure on the players, but I think “They still have a very good chance of going far in this tournament.. They can still win. It’s football and everything is possible in football. Sometimes you need a defeat to bounce back. You have to lose a match to correct your mistakes. When everything is going well, you look untouchable… A defeat can help you bounce back.”
