Washington, DC – A new survey of the Research Company Gallup suggests that only 32% of Americans approve the military action of Israel in Gaza, a drop of 10 points compared to September 2024, because anger against the atrocities against the Palestinians continues to increase.
The investigation, published on Tuesday, also showed a huge partisan fracture on the issue. Sixty and eleven percent of the respondents who identified themselves as members of the Republican Party said they approved the conduct of Israel, against 8% of Democrats.
Overall, 60% of respondents declared the military action of Israel in Gaza disapproving.
Shibley Telhami, professor at the University of Maryland and director of the Critical Survey, said that the last survey shows a tendency to grow with Israel which goes beyond the war against Gaza.
“What we see here is a rooting of a generational paradigm among young Americans, mainly Democrats and independents, but even some young Republicans – who now perceive horror in Gaza in order to describe the character of Israel,” said Telhami in Tel Aviv Tribune.
In Tuesday’s survey, only 9% of respondents under the age of 35 said they approved Israel’s military action in Gaza, and 6% said they had a favorable opinion on Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
The study follows a survey in April from the Pew Research Center, which revealed that the majority of respondents – including 50% of Republicans under 50 – said they had unfavorable opinions on Israel.
But even if public opinion in the United States continues to change, Washington’s policy of unconditional support in Israel has been unshakable. Since the start of the war against Gaza, the United States has provided Israel with billions of dollars in military aid, as well as diplomatic support for the United Nations.
President Donald Trump and his predecessor, Joe Biden, were without compromise, supporters of the Israeli assault on Gaza, which human rights groups have described as a genocide.
Israel killed more than 60,000 Palestinians in Gaza, imposed a suffocating and flattened seat most of the enclave, reducing its buildings in rubble. The siege is recognized for having caused a deadly hunger: the UN said on Tuesday that there was “growing evidence of famine and widespread famine”.
Nevertheless, the US Congress also remains stuch pro-Israeli on a bipartite basis. Earlier this month, a legislative thrust to block $ 500 million in anti-missile defense support for Israel failed during a 422 to six vote in the House of Representatives.
So, what explains the schism between the views of the average Americans and the policies of their elected representatives?
Telhami cited the “priorities” of voters. He explained that foreign policy has traditionally not been an engine factor in the elections. For example, internal problems such as abortion, economy and firearm control generally dominate the electoral agenda of Democrats.
He also noted the influence of pro-Israeli groups, such as the American Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), which spent millions of dollars to overcome criticism from the Israeli government, in particular progressives in democratic primaries.
But things change, according to the professor.
Palestine increases in public importance, he said, with American voters who examine the question through the objective of “soul creation”, as a means of questioning what they represent.
“It is not only Gaza. It is that we allow horror in Gaza as a country – in terms of help or support or, even in some cases, direct collaboration,” said Telhami.
“That it actually creates a paradigmatic change on whom we are, not only:” Do we support Israel? Do we support the Palestinians? “”
He said that the victory of the defender of Palestinian rights Zohran Mamdani in the primary mayor Democrat in New York last month underlines this movement.
