Funai representatives, the Brazilian agency for native affairs, arrived soon after and took the man to one of their nearby establishments.

The funai later declared in a statement that the young man was returned to the forest Thursday afternoon. According to the agency, a team of health professionals had been sent to determine whether the young man had been exposed to a disease against which isolated native tribes are not immune. Surveillance has also been set up to prevent people from reaching the isolated tribe site.

In principle, Brazil does not actively seek to come into contact with these groups, but establishes protected and monitored areas, such as Mamoriá Grande, near where the meeting occurred.
