A government document – viewed by Reuters – revealed that Canada is working with the United States of America in dealing with the hesitant countries in accepting the deportees, as the two countries intensify their efforts to return immigrants to their countries of origin.
Since US President Donald Trump began his second term in January, the United States has taken strict measures against immigrants in the country illegally. However, Washington sometimes faced difficulty in deporting people at the speed they want, due to several reasons, including the unwillingness of countries to accept them.
As Canada increased the deportations, which reached its highest level during a decade last year, it collided with the countries that do not want to accept the deportees. For example, Canadian officials issued a one -time travel document in June to a Somali man who wanted to deport him because his country did not provide him with travel documents.
In an e -mail message to an unknown recipient on February 28, the Director General of International Affairs of the Canadian Ministry of Immigration wrote, “Canada will also continue to work with the United States to deal with the hesitant countries in deportations to enable Canada and the United States to better restore foreign nationals to their countries of origin.”
The Ministry referred questions about the message to the Canadian Border Services Department, which refused to determine how Canada and the United States cooperated, and when the cooperation begins, and whether the work relationship has changed this year.
“The authorities in Canada and the United States are facing common obstacles to removing unacceptable persons, which could include unconventional foreign governments that refuse to return their citizens or issue travel documents in a timely manner,” the administration spokesman said in an email.
The spokesman added that the Canadian Border Services Department has committed to an increase in the number of deportees from 19,000 in the past fiscal year to 20,000 over the next two years.
Immigration has become a controversial issue in Canada, where some politicians blame immigrants for the housing crisis and the cost of living.
The US Department of Internal Security has not yet responded to a Reuters request to comment on this issue.
