The EU Anti-Fraud Office has opened an investigation into the establishment which only has 12 places available.
The European Union Anti-Fraud Office has asked to consult the accounts of a Hungarian nursery in the municipality of Kazár, the creation of which would have cost nearly 1.8 million euros. The establishment in question opened its doors last September and only has 12 places. Each cradle would therefore have cost the European Union nearly €150,000.
A rigged market
Hungarian MP Ákos Hadházy discovered the alleged fraud earlier this year. “It’s obviously a theft.”he declared. “It is easy to find the connection between the construction company and the other officials involved. Of course, it was not a real public contract, but a rigged one.”
Another investigation is underway in the village where the crèche is located, involving a relative of the mayor who allegedly received nearly 1.2 million euros to create fish ponds.
Speaking to Euronews, the city’s mayor said an investigation into possible overcharging had already been opened and a statement would only be issued once it was completed.
According to the Corruption Perception Index established by Transparency International, Hungary would be the most corrupt country in the EU.
