The European Union is releasing 1.2 billion in aid to help Italy after the floods which ravaged the north of the country last spring.

The President of the European Commission confirmed the EU aid package following a visit to Forli, one of the most affected towns in Emilia-Romagna.
Ursula Von der Leyen, President of the European Commission: “(…) The European Union, that was the message (at the time), has been at your side since day one, and the message today , is that we continue to be at your side. We want to help you (…) to recover, to become more resilient, for example, to improve protection against floods or to repair public infrastructure. (… )”
According to Ursula der Leyen, climate change is to blame for the severe floods that have devastated the region after months of drought.
The President of the European Commission underlines the need to implement preventive measures.
