The United States and the United Kingdom, “with the support” of Australia, Bahrain, Canada and the Netherlands, launched massive strikes against Houthi targets in Yemen, overnight from Thursday to Friday .

Surface ships, several aircraft and at least one submarine are believed to have participated in the operation. The American army claims to have bombed 16 sites and targeted around sixty targets.

For US President Joe Biden, the operation shows that the United States “will not tolerate” Houthi attacks on ships in the Red Sea.

On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council had already demanded an end to attacks and boat hijackings by Yemeni rebels.

In a sign of increasing tension in the Red Sea, on Thursday, Iran hijacked an oil tanker coming from the Iraqi port of Basra.

Tehran supports the Yemeni rebellion against official power, supported for its part by Saudi Arabia.
