Latest updates and human impact
- The UN’s highest court, the International Court of Justice (ICJ), will begin hearings in the South African genocide case against Israel on Thursday. You can follow developments on our live page.
- The Israeli military told reporters on Wednesday that it had found evidence of captives in an underground tunnel. Military spokesman Daniel Hagari did not elaborate on what exactly was found in the tunnel, say when the captives were there or identify them, the AP reported.
- Sufficient aid is arriving in Gaza and there is no food shortage, Israeli official Moshe Tetro said.
- Only three of 21 planned aid deliveries to northern Gaza have taken place since the beginning of January, the United Nations humanitarian agency (OCHA) announced on Wednesday.
- On January 10, the Palestine Power Generation Company’s generators were blocked north of the Nuseirat refugee camp and their four generators caught fire, OCHA reported.
Diplomacy
- The UN Security Council, backed by 11 members, adopted a resolution on Wednesday demanding that Yemen’s Houthis end their attacks on ships in the Red Sea and release the Japan-operated Galaxy Leader, which was seized in November. China, Russia, Algeria and Mozambique abstained while no members voted against the resolution led by the United States and Japan.
- US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas to seek governance reforms as he concluded his fourth diplomatic trip to the Middle East since the start of the Gaza war. Sources report that the meeting was tense, with arguments and disagreements, Tel Aviv Tribune’s Hamdah Salhut reported.
- John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, denied that Israel targeted journalists in Gaza, adding that the United States continues to “ensure the protection of journalists.”
- The World Health Organization said Wednesday that its supplies and humanitarian teams were ready, but it was unable to get them to southern Gaza due to lack of access. Israeli authorities have repeatedly refused to allow UN humanitarian teams to deliver aid to Gaza.
Raids and settlers in the West Bank
- Tel Aviv Tribune’s Arab colleagues and local media reported ongoing raids across the occupied West Bank, including in the towns of Jericho, Qalqilya and el-Bireh.
- Israeli fire injured three young Palestinians on Wednesday evening during clashes in the village of Aboud, located northwest of Ramallah in the central West Bank, the Palestinian Wafa news agency reported.
- A young Palestinian man died of his injuries on Wednesday evening. He was shot dead by Israeli forces in Ramallah on Monday, Wafa reported.
- Israeli settlers set fire to a Palestinian-owned farm and olive trees outside the town of Kafr ad-Dik in the occupied West Bank province of Salfit on Wednesday evening, Wafa reported.
