Gaza- Tailor Aed Salha used a trick to enable him to continue his work on a sewing machine, which requires electricity to operate, in light of a severe electricity and fuel crisis as a result of the severe siege imposed by the Israeli occupation, coinciding with the fierce war on the Gaza Strip that has been escalating since last October 7.

Salha (46 years old), a tailor from the city of Rafah, south of the Gaza Strip, had his work disrupted during the first four days of the aggression, before he was guided by the idea of kinetic energy by rotating a bicycle, to operate the sewing machine.

Salha’s two children take turns moving the bicycle wheel, which is connected to a rubber belt, to the machine’s operating disk. This movement gives her the ability to rotate and work, and is the only source of livelihood for Salha, who has been practicing this profession for 13 years.

What this tailor does is one of many other methods that Gazans resorted to to overcome the harsh conditions of war and siege that cast a heavy shadow on all aspects of their lives.

The city of Rafah, the hometown of Khayyat Salha, witnessed a massive wave of displacement. Official estimates indicate that more than 700,000 displaced people from the neighboring city of Khan Yunis, Gaza City, and areas in the northern Gaza Strip have sought refuge in this city adjacent to the border with Egypt, seeking lost safety, as death and destruction pursue them.
