Donald Tusk was appointed prime minister by the Polish parliament on Monday. His appointment puts an end to 8 years of nationalist politics. The announcement of the vote was broadcast live in some cinemas in Warsaw. Last step, representing Poland at the European summit in Brussels
The Polish Diet voted Monday evening in favor of the leader of the European coalition by 248 votes to 201. During his general policy speech, Donald Tusk mentioned the agenda of his predecessor Mateusz Morawiecki.
“Thank you, it’s a great day,” said the new prime minister. “Not for me but for everyone who thought for so many years that things would get better.” He called the nationalist years “dark years.”
Prime Minister, a position that the new Prime Minister knows well, since his first election dates from 2007. Donald Tusk will, however, have to cohabit with conservative President Andrzej Duda at least until the next presidential elections in 2025.
Back on the European stage, the Polish Prime Minister spoke of his desire to rebuild a national community that is now divided. He also called for total mobilization in favor of Ukraine at war.
Former President of the European Council from 2014 to 2019, his return to Brussels will be marked by his desire to meet Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to share his support.
His election is historic, he promises to restore Poland’s credibility within the EU.
The vote of the Diet (Polish lower house) was broadcast live in certain cinemas in Warsaw and was attended by nearly 1,000 people. One of the organizers Michal Marszal wants to make it an educational program.
The new Prime Minister is expected to be sworn in on Wednesday morning.
