The office of Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro announced yesterday, Thursday, that his government will consult with the President and Parliament with the aim of recognizing the State of Palestine at the United Nations next September.

A statement said that Portugal “intends to recognize the State of Palestine as part of a procedure that may take place during the eight -year session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York next September.”

According to the statement, this decision was taken after “multiple contacts with the partners, especially taking into account the very disturbing development of the conflict, whether at the human level or through repeated references to a possible inclusion of Palestinian lands by Israel.”

“The government has followed a very cautious and careful path,” said Portuguese President Marcelo Repello de Souza. “

Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel said in a statement to the public television “RTB” network as “carefully thoughtful decision.”

This announcement came at a time when an international hunger control body, supported by the United Nations last Tuesday, said that “the worst star scenario occurs in Gaza.”

As soon as it takes this step, Portugal will join other countries such as Canada, Britain and France, which indicated its intention to recognize the State of Palestine next month.
