The ruling “All Progressive Conference” party in Nigeria announced the recommendation of President Paula Ahmed Tenobo as a single candidate for the presidential elections scheduled for the beginning of the year 2027, in a move that reflects its political team’s desire to continue what they call the “reformist approach”.

The announcement of the nomination decision came after a party conference held in the capital, Abuja, last Thursday, in conjunction with the second anniversary of the arrival of Tenobo to power, where the party leader Abdullah Ganduji confirmed that the National Executive Committee unanimously supports his candidacy for a second term, describing him as “the single party candidate.”

The government says that the economic policies pursued by Tenobo – on top of which is the abolition of fuel subsidies and the liberalization of the currency exchange rate – contributed to the revival of the economy and the movement of markets, although it caused a high crisis that the country has not known for years.

These economic reforms were widely praised by specialized institutions concerned with partnership with Nigeria, such as the International Monetary Fund and classification agencies.

Armed attacks in northeastern Nigeria caused an increase in displacement, lack of food and the spread of diseases

While the government faces internal criticism for the high costs of living and the continued security challenges, such as armed rebellion and the attacks of extremist groups, the ministers these days immortalize the second anniversary of the president’s arrival to power, and they talk about their achievements in various fields.

Paula Tenopo, 73, had won the 2023 elections amid appeals and accusations of forgery by the main competitors from the opposition, but the country’s judiciary has not reached what was proven.

After the party’s national conference voted for his choice, Tenobo will be a candidate for a second and last period, as the constitution determines the president’s mandate in only two periods, each of which is 4 years.

Observers believe that the weakness of the opposition and its internal divisions, as well as a wave of prominent splits in favor of the ruling party, strengthens the Tenobo site in the upcoming presidential race at the beginning of the year 2027.
