On Monday, the capital of Guinea, the work of the National Forum devoted to discussing the future of the press in the country, and knowing the challenges facing the media, and the relationship between the state and the institutions working in the field.
The forum organized by the Supreme Communication Authority, and lasts for 3 days, was attended by the head of the Transitional National Council, General Mamadi Dumboy, Prime Minister Bahi Uri, and a number of civil and military figures.
Guests from several African countries, including experts and specialists in the media field from Morocco, Senegal, Gambia, Mali and Cote d’Ivoire, participate in the forum.
In his opening speech, the head of the Supreme Commission for Communication Yassin Diallo said, “This forum constitutes a platform to discuss the challenges related to the practice of the profession of journalism, which unfortunately has become hacked by those seeking profit, and they are characterized by the lack of integrity … Our responsibility is responsible for cleansing the sector, restoring respect and credibility.”
Restricting journalists
In his speech to the head of the Transitional Council, the head of the Supreme Commission for Communication from the Guinean judiciary demanded the continuation of the investigation of the disappearance of the beloved journalist Marwan Karara, the editor -in -chief of the newspaper “Rivalatir”, whose institution said that forces from the gendarmerie took him by force on December 3, 2024.
This forum comes at a time when the Guinean press is facing serious challenges, as the authorities withdrew the licenses of 3 media institutions, which are “Vim”, “Esbas” and “Degoma”.
The government, with the military leadership, also banned 4 broadcasts, and a television channel that has a wide follow -up, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of Information on May 22, 2024.
Observers from the National Press Syndicate hope that the transitional authorities will re -grant licenses to media institutions, especially as the country is coming to elections at the end of this year, supposed to be organized in an atmosphere of individual and collective freedoms.
