The Gaza Strip is living today one of the worst humanitarian crises in the modern era, as the tragedy of hunger in the Gaza Strip has exceeded the limits of endurance, and the calls of the needy are not hearing, while the occupation state is blessed with abundant supplies of food, and the world is blessed with the good food, the children of Gaza die hunger and the overwhelming majority of the sector residents face a severe shortage of food and water in light of the closure of more than two months and complete lack of security And shelter.

Hunger in Gaza: It is not the result of the moment

Even before the outbreak of the war in October 2023, the sector was groaning under the weight of siege, unemployment and poverty. According to the United Nations analysis, more than 68% of families in the Gaza Strip were suffering from food insecurity in varying degrees, as it was largely dependent on food aid, and the general poverty rate reached about 61% at the end of the year 2022, while unemployment was 45%.

On the other hand, the occupation state has adequate food resources and high food safety, and depends on local production and various imports without hunger rates.

The global rate of hunger was not exceeding 9.2%, and the percentage of hunger in the Arab countries does not exceed 14%, and thus the hunger rate in the Gaza Strip before the war is among the highest in the world, due to the blockade imposed by the occupation on the Gaza Strip since 2007, according to which the occupation prohibited many materials that it considered “bilateral use”, which included fertilizers, fodder and agricultural improvements.

Despite Israeli control over the crossings, food commodities- of flour, vegetables and dairy- were part of limited shares. The people were reaping from the supplies received only to be available according to the strict restrictions on the crossings.

Targeting food sources: an imminent disaster warning

With the outbreak of the war in October 2023, a real catastrophe of agriculture, livestock and fish in Gaza occurred. United Nations and satellite analyzes showed that 75% of agricultural lands were burned or destroyed (11293 hectares out of 15053 hectares), and livestock losses were more than 96% of livestock and poultry.

The strikes also eliminated more than three quarters of olive orchids. This huge sabotage practically eliminated local production; Which covered 40% of the pre -war diet, which is now almost non -existent.

The water and irrigation infrastructure was also damaged, as wells and energy are stalled with a lack of fuel. The status of the agricultural sector has become on the verge of collapse and people in complete darkness, searching for the effects of destruction from any fertilizer or seed.

The occupation was not satisfied with that, but rather targeted 37 centers to distribute food aid and 26 cakes to distribute meals and many aid trucks loaded with foodstuffs, in addition to the full closure that was repeated several times during the war and that we are currently living longer and exceeding two months.

In addition to direct destruction, the war led to the closure of bakeries and warehouses. At the end of March 2025, the World Food Program (WFP) announced that all subsidized bakeries were out of service for gas and flour scarcity.

Prices also reached fictional levels, as a kilo of flour recorded between 500% to 700% above its price before the war. Thousands of food aid trucks also accumulated on and around the crossings and were not allowed to enter.

Unprecedented famine: harvested souls

The Gaza Strip is almost faced with a complete catastrophe. Where the relief workers indicate indicates that the sector is free of any “safe food” areas, and they describe the sector as now in “stage 4” (famine emergency) or “stage 5” (a catastrophic disaster), and it is expected that the Gaza Strip will be declared at any moment that it is completely in the event of a catastrophic disaster, especially after the World Food Program announced that all its food stocks in Gaza are exhausted by Gaza by April 25, 2025.

Food prices also increased to record levels ranging between (+400%) and (+2612%) with a complete collapse of livelihoods. Where the World Food Program indicated that the loaf price rose 15 times above its official level before closing the crossings, and as a result of the state of famine and malnutrition, the health sector has documented 57 deaths (53 children) linked to the state of starvation and not inserting infant formula, and high levels of malnutrition in children, pregnant women, lactating women, the elderly and people with disabilities who cannot reach healthy food.

The government media office in Gaza stated on: 4-5-2025 that “more than 3,500 children under the age of five face the threat of imminent death, while about 290,000 children stand on the brink of perdition, at a time when 1.1 million children lack a minimum food necessary to survive, and more than 70,000 children have reached the minimum food for survival, and more than 70,000 children have arrived in hospitals, due to acute malnutrition.”, This may warn that the human losses resulting from the continuation of this famine may go beyond the famines of Somalia, Yemen and South Sudan.

Slowness is not a weapon to achieve the goals of the war

All international norms describe the starvation of population as a banned aggressive style, and a war crime and a crime against humanity has been considered. The states of the fourth parties to the Fourth Geneva Convention are prohibited from “using hunger as a weapon” or as punishment.

The International Criminal Court confirmed in its accusations that the starvation of civilians (depriving them of the necessary materials for living) is punishable by war crimes. The International Charter also stipulated that “the suffering of civilians by depriving them of food” is an international crime.

In practice, many bodies are supportive of holding the perpetrators of these crimes accountable. The International Criminal Court has opened an investigation, and issued an arrest warrant against the Prime Minister and the Israeli Defense Minister for their involvement in war crimes, including “depriving civilians of food.”

Also, the United Nations established an investigation committee and formed an international commission to monitor violations in Gaza, and the issue of “starving civilians” was included in its human rights reports.

Despite these measures, the occupation continues to use hunger as a weapon to achieve the goals of the war, due to the use of the United States of America (veto) in the Security Council, which gives protection and encouragement to the occupation to continue to starve the population.

Steps to move to save Gaza from the catastrophic disaster

  • International pressure and advocacy: We must press. To issue international decisions binding to open the crossings immediately, and take measures to protect civilians. The Human Rights Council must follow up on the issue and intensify investigations, and the General Assembly must move the United Nations Charter to recognize the starvation of the population as a crime against humanity. The International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice must speed up their procedures.

International organizations, especially the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and the League of Arab States, must adopt strong positions to prosecute the occupation and its leaders in international forums. In addition to escalating the pressure of civil society and the global street, which contributes to forcing decision makers to pay attention to the tragedy.

  • AFor ambulance procedures inside Gaza: Working urgently on maintenance of water wells and desalination plants and operating them with the availability of solar power panels, maintenance of bakeries, attention to seasonal agriculture, household agriculture and tents; To contribute to providing the possible food, allocating the remaining fuel to operate bakeries and equipping meals, better coordination of the rationalization process and distributing the remaining food in a more fair way, addressing the monopoly of suppliers and raising prices, and adopting purchasing exchange in currencies and digital applications to facilitate the purchase process without exorbitant costs.
  • External preparations in preparation for opening the crossings: Preparing non -rapidly damaged food aid and finding solutions for damaged foodstuffs such as canning and drying, in addition to preparing emergency packages of seeds, agricultural tools, fertilizers and feed animals to support immediate agricultural reproduction when opening the borders, and preparing immediate logistical plans to connect thousands of containers from food supplies, electric power generation systems and spare parts to extract, purify and connect water.
  • Primary plan to eliminate hunger: In line with the goal of global sustainable development to eliminate hunger, a preliminary plan for the post -emergency stage must be prepared to focus on seeds, land reclamation, restoring agricultural facilities, rebuilding greenhouses, fractures of irrigation channels, repair wells, supplying fertilizers, agricultural equipment, re -multiplying lost livestock, creating agricultural incubators to reclaim agricultural lands, retrieving livestock, and supporting farmers Current and rehabilitate new farmers.

The crisis in Gaza is not just a transient conflict, but rather a real test of the global human conscience. Every day that passes without a solution means more suffering and death to innocent people. UNRWA Commissioner Philip Lazarini said: “Humanity in Gaza is going through its hours.” Time is not in favor of the victims of this catastrophe, and the world is required to move now before it is too late.
