Colombia, Georgown and Tatas universities in the United States witnessed coordinated protests, condemning the arrest of academics and students who supported the Palestinian cause.

The protests demanded the release of a researcher at the University of Georgetown in Dar Khan Suri, the Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil, a graduate student at Columbia University, and the Turkish student, Rumaisa Ozturk, who is continuing her studies to obtain a doctorate at the University of Tafs, who were arrested because of their support for Palestine.

Dr. Nader Hashemi, a Middle East policy expert at Georgetown University, who participated in the protest, said that the detainees were arrested without any charges, describing it as a “policy aimed at silencing freedom of expression in support of Palestine.”

Hashemi explained that he had met Dar Khan Suri, who was arrested last March and detained in a center in Texas, noting that his prison conditions are difficult, as he is allowed to go out to the open air for only two hours per week.

He added that a Syrian is trying in prison to teach his friends the ideas of the late Indian leader Mahatma Gandhi, stressing that this arrest contributes to an important way to communicating the reality of genocide in Gaza to the world.

Increased fear

“If they can do this with one of the academics, they can do the same with all of us.” Said Dr. Elliot Cola, who participated in the protest, said, “If they can do this with one of the academics, they can do the same with all of us.”

Cola pointed out that the atmosphere of the growing fear on the campus has caused great concern among students and academics of immigrants.

Students and academics continue at the universities of Georgetown and Colombia and embarrassing the organization of demonstrations every Monday, demanding the release of Dar Khan Suri, Mahmoud Khalil and Ramisa Ozturk.

On the eighth of last March, the American authorities, Khalil, who led solidarity protests at the University of Colombia last year, arrested a condemnation of the genocide committed by Israel in the Gaza Strip.

The United States also canceled visas and the legal status of more than a thousand students starting in March, and many students filed lawsuits against the Trump administration because of the cancellation of their visas, and has been issued temporary orders to restore the legal status of a few students.

The protests supporting Palestine, which started at the University of Colombia, spread to more than 50 universities in the country, and the police detained more than 3100 people, most of them students and faculty.
