The decree indicates that the families of the Palestinians imprisoned or killed by Israel can request social assistance like others.
The Palestinian Authority (PA) has announced the end of a program to provide payments to the families of the Palestinians killed or imprisoned by Israel, a long-standing request from the United States and Israel.
President Mahmoud Abbas published on Monday a decree “revoining” the legal articles relating to the initiative of compensation.
The order presented this decision as a restructuring, passing the fund of the Ministry of Social Development to the Palestinian National Foundation for Economic Empowerment.
He said that families would be eligible for regular well-being services like the other Palestinians “in accordance with the standards of justice and universality”, but it is not clear if the allowances would stop immediately or continue under a new form.
It is not uncommon for countries to provide special payments to people killed in a violent conflict. But the United States has long dismissed the fund of so-called Palestinian martyrs, arguing that it rewards attacks on Israel and dubbing it “pay to kill”.
Hamas condemned Abbas on Monday’s “non -patriotic” move, appealing to him immediately. “We have to appreciate the sacrifices of prisoners and injured families and martyrs instead of abandoning them,” the group said in a statement.
Israel previously retained and deduced Palestinian tax revenue on payments.
Abbas’ decree comes in the middle of an AP push to present itself as an internationally credible option to take over Gaza.
The PA security forces also repressed the combatants engaged in an armed struggle against Israel in occupied West Bank.
In December, the PA launched a several -week security campaign in Jenin’s refugee camp which, according to her, aimed to restore law and order, leading to accusations of siege in the region.
The PA campaign was followed by Israel’s “Iron Wall” operation in Jenin, part of its wider offensive through the West Bank, which intensified after the entry into force of the agreement of Gaza’s ceasefire.
The Israeli incursion has killed dozens – including women and children – and brought a blow for the local economy, costing at least $ 8.4 million in damage per day, according to the Chamber of Commerce and D ‘Jenin industry.
The Palestinians accused the Israeli army of destroying the Nur Shams refugee camp in the north of the territory on Monday. Ahmed al-Izza, an elderly resident, said the soldiers had stormed people’s houses and forced them to leave.
“Destruction is everywhere in camp,” he said. “The residents who have remained their turn. The camp is surrounded and the Israeli forces attack all the houses. »»
The United States foresee Israel – which has been accused by the main rights defense groups of imposing apartheid against the Palestinians – with billions of dollars of military aid each year.
