Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer laid wreaths on Thursday at a wall commemorating victims of the war with Russia.

The wall, located outside the golden-domed St. Michael Monastery, an iconic Kyiv landmark, is covered in photos of the victims that stretch for a city block.

It has become a place of pilgrimage for families who pay tribute to their deceased loved ones.

Mr Starmer arrived in the Ukrainian capital promising to help keep the country safe for a century, days before Donald Trump was sworn in as US president.

Mr Starmer’s unannounced visit on Thursday is his first trip to Ukraine since taking office in July.

He visited the country in 2023, when he was opposition leader, and has spoken twice with Mr Zelensky in London since he became prime minister.
