Every year on January 10, Nishinomiya Shrine in Hyogo Prefecture, Japan, holds a traditional ritual during a New Year’s event to bring prosperity and good luck in business.

On Friday, the runners, chosen by lot, gathered in front of the main gate of the complex and began running to the sound of drums. The first three to reach the main hall, 230 meters away, won the title of “lucky men”.

This year’s big winner is Ogishi Fumiya, a 17-year-old high school student from Takarazuka City, Hyogo Prefecture. He was participating in the race for the first time.

He expressed his surprise at becoming “the luckiest man” and said he hoped for a good New Year and would also like to share his luck with those affected by the massive earthquake on the Noto Peninsula in January 2024.
