New Orleans kicked off the Carnival season with the Joan of Arc parade, just days after the deadly New Year’s Eve attack that left 14 dead.
Despite the tragedy that unfolded on New Year’s Eve, hundreds of people gathered in the city’s French Quarter, seeing the parade as a symbol of resilience and hope.
Life Sacco, 17, played the role of Joan of Arc in the parade, donning a costume and brandishing a sword. The weight of the parade, which tells the life of Joan of Arc – from military bravery to sainthood to burning at the stake – did not escape Ms. Sacco. According to her, the patron saint of France represents what the city needs : courage, endurance and the strength of hope.
Outgoing US President Joe Biden was nearby to pay his respects to the victims of the attack. The holiday season continues with parades and other events leading up to Mardi Gras in March.
