Jakarta- The Indonesian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the comprehensive blockade and Israeli attacks that caused the starvation of Palestinian civilians and the death of countless numbers of them in the northern Gaza Strip. It considered that “the attacks that targeted health care facilities and workers in northern Gaza, including the Indonesian hospital, are clear violations of international law, international humanitarian law, and human rights.”
This condemnation came in the first statement of the Indonesian Foreign Ministry, a day after the appointment of the new Foreign Minister Sugiono and three of his deputies in the government of the new Indonesian President, Prabowo Subianto.
In the statement, Indonesia called for “the protection of hospitals, healthcare workers and all patients receiving care in all circumstances, without exception.” It also called on Israel to immediately stop its attacks throughout the Gaza Strip, especially in its north, and urged the United Nations Security Council to take decisive action to end the war without delay.
Supportive attitudes
For his part, Deputy Foreign Minister for Islamic World Affairs Anis Matta, one of the three new Deputy Foreign Ministers, said that he will focus his diplomatic efforts on the issues of the Islamic world, especially the Palestinian issue, explaining that supporting the freedom and independence of the Palestinian people is a “constitutional trust” for Indonesians.
Speaking to reporters in Jakarta, Matta added that Indonesia will continue to do its best in the diplomatic and humanitarian tracks, pointing to the impact that the “Palestinian-Israeli conflict” has had on the surrounding region and on the global level as well.
Three days ago, the Indonesian Ulema Council issued a statement in which it mourned the head of the Hamas political bureau, Yahya Al-Sanwar, and stated that he was “a loyal and persistent mujahid who led the resistance against the unjust Israeli occupation, and we consider him a martyr, God willing.”
The statement, which was signed by the Council’s Chairman, Anwar Iskandar, and its Secretary-General, Amir Shah Tambunan, added that “the killing of Yahya Sinwar, the resistance leaders, and all Palestinian civilians will not weaken the resistance to the Israeli occupation and the pursuit of independence,” reiterating the pledge of the Indonesian Ulema Council and the Islamic nation in his country to “support the Palestinians.” In order to expel the occupation and gain their freedom.”
