Last year, almost 52 million euros were stolen from Hungarian internet users by fraudsters and hackers.
THURSDAY, Hundreds of Budapest students learned how to protect themselves against online fraud at a ‘CyberFest’ event organized by Hungarian police.
Hackers, influencers, lawyers and Secret Service cybersecurity agents have warned young people about growing threats online.
“With 34 classes from 23 schools, nearly a thousand students had the opportunity to participate in our activities today”says Major General Tamás Terdik, Budapest police chief.
“Our goal is to provide interactive programs so that students learn something, sometimes without even realizing it, and take new knowledge home with them”he adds.
Be careful of public WiFi networks!
Experts from the National Cybersecurity Institute warned students about the dangers of public WiFi networks, on which our personal data can easily be stolen using a legally commercially available device.
“There are devices that make it easy to create deceptive networks, and all traffic passing through them can be monitored and intercepted”explains Tamás László Kiss, director of the National Cyber Defense Institute of the National Security Service. “That’s why I advise everyone not to connect to such free networks”.
Although the activities offered as part of this CyberFest are essentially fun, the dangers online are very real, and not just for young people.
According to statistics from the National Bank of Hungary, fraudsters stole 9 billion forints (22 million euros) from Hungarians on the Internet two years ago and 23 billion forints (57 million euros) last year.
